About - Off Stage
Off Stage (and really far from it)
Urmika studied International Development, worked with the Educational Development Center on youth participation and alternative education, and is on the Board of Directors for Street Law, Inc. She has participated on panels with the World Bank and USAID, and is committed to promoting rights for youth and women, especially in the areas of domestic violence, employment and female empowerment. Urmika was a litigation paralegal at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, and begins law school in Fall 2007.
Off Stage (but not far from it)
Urmika interned at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, working in Development with the Friends Volunteers. She was also an active member of Arth Arts, a student based theater company that produced, acted and directed comedy and drama for college students from the South Asian Diaspora, focusing on issues of sexuality, religious conflict, intergenerational gaps and other cultural issues. With Arth Arts, Urmika toured college campuses and gained practical skills on arts management. She attended the first National Asian American Theater conference in Los Angeles, hosted by the East West Players, and looks forward to the first South Asian American Theater Conference in Chicago, hosted by the Silk Road Theater Company. See here for press release (PDF, 13K).
Off Stage (and getting closer)
Urmika continues to search for ways to use performance as a platform for social change.
